Fraternity History
This is where we come from…
Phi Sigma Pi was founded at State Teachers College at Warrensburg — now known as University of Central Missouri — on February 14, 1916, by Dr. Eldo L. Hendricks, Dr. Claude A. Phillips, and Dr. Clarence H. McClure. The fraternity became national in 1921 when a second chapter was founded at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. The fraternity then evolved from an honorary professional fraternity to a professional education fraternity, and, in 1966, to an honor fraternity for all disciplines. Phi Sigma Pi became coeducational in 1977 and resolved to describe itself as gender-inclusive in 2014. Learn more about our national history.
This is where we’ve come…
On April 17, 2011, Phi Sigma Pi inducted the Charter Class of the Zeta Iota Chapter at St. Joseph’s University. This Charter Class included twenty-six members who enthusiastically worked toward bringing an official chapter of Phi Sigma Pi to Hawk Hill. Our Founder and first President was Sally Siebert ’12.
On August 6, 2011, Raya Abat ’13 and Stephanie Scalice ’13 received Zeta Iota’s Charter on behalf of the entire Chapter during the Awards Banquet of the 2011 Phi Sigma Pi National Convention held in Arlington, Virginia. Acquisition of this Charter symbolized Zeta Iota’s official recognition as an active Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi at the national level.
On April 18, 2013 we reached a milestone of 100 Brother signatures in our Chapter Roll Book.
On May 17, 2014, the last of our Charter class graduated from St. Joseph’s — our first set of Brothers to spend all four years as members of Phi Sigma Pi. Learn more about our local history.
