Our Mission

Committed to finding the good in all things, the Saint Joseph’s University Speech and Debate Team inspires future leaders for the community around them. Providing a voice for all promotes the fundamental need for advocacy, for themselves, as well as others. Through creativity, research, communication, and performance, the Villiger Team continues to develop and achieve greatness.

About Us

The Villiger Speech and Debate Team is known for its long tradition of public speaking, extending over 160 years, and many generations of speakers. The team participates in both NFA and AFA each year as well as Pennsylvania States and various local competitions in the fall and spring semesters. The team also hosts the Villiger Tournament every year here on Hawk Hill in November with hundreds of high school students participating in one of the largest tournaments in the country.

The team travels around the United States, competing in public address, limited preparation, oral interpretation, and debate events. Students competing in public address specialize in; persuasion, informative, after-dinner, and communication analysis. Students competing in limited preparation events specialize in; extemporaneous and impromptu speaking. Students who compete in oral interpretation focus on; prose, poetry, dramatic interpretation, duo, and program oral interpretation. Students occasionally participate in debate events as well; parliamentarian or lincoln-douglas debates.
