Toss or Keep – Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the United States version of a semi – universal healthcare and citizens must pay for health coverage. The ACA was created during President’s Obama’s first term in office however, the new and current President Donald Trump has put into motion acts that could very well repeal this law. One area that will be greatly affected are vulnerable populations such as people of color. Many within these communities were not able to afford this healthcare coverage when it was first introduced. Moreover, if this law is repealed the options for many who could purchase coverage through the access of the ACA Marketplace and still utilize these plans will be to apply for Medicaid or have no health insurance at all. The question to replace or repeal is not an easy answer or fix. Furthermore, if the ACA is kept there will be extreme modifications. There are three possible considerations for replacing the ACA:
- Having each state utilize block grants as a way of coverage. Consequently, the caveat to this would mean yet again the U.S. government will be in control of “rationing healthcare”.
- Keeping the current ACA law with changes would be the better option because removing this law would completely would put the healthcare system into a further disarrayed state.
- Or creating a true (free) universal healthcare for all Americans from the foundational structures of the ACA no matter the socio-economic status.
Going forward our continued hope is that the politicians of the United States House and Senate will make the right choice and remember that this country citizen’s life, liberty and pursuit of happiness is your top priority always and foremost!
